"The Senior Care Resource Network"

As we all know, providing care for the elderly can be demanding and difficult--especially if your loved one resists care. If the elder is resistant to care, even starting the conversation about the need for help be challenging.

Here are four tips to consider when starting the process.

  1. Find the right time for the discussion.Select a time when you and your loved one are comfortable and relaxed.

  2. Ask elder-focused questions. The conversation shouldn't be a one-way street. Discuss your loved one's preferences, so they can be taken into consideration.

  3. Involve other family members. Having other family members present may help you persuade your elder to eventually accept assistance.

  4. Don't give up. If your loved one doesn't want to discuss the topic, don't get frustrated. Be persistent and try again at a later time.

Three strategies for dealing with caregiving resistance

  1. Get professional support. In many cases, the elder may be willing to listen to their physician or lawyer about the need to receive care.

  2. Suggest a short trial period. Suggest your loved one go through a trial run, allowing them to experience the care first hand before making a final decision.

  3. Discuss how care maintains independence. In home care may help your loved one remain in their home for as long as possible.

An elder being resistant to care is often a normal part of the caregiving journey. Be sure to involve them in the decision-making process and continue to explain the benefits of professional care assistance, and you should be able to make them feel more open to receiving help.
